The Bass Rock

The Bass Rock is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) offshore and is 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) north-east of North Berwick. The island, a volcanic plug which is 107 metres (351 ft) at its highest point, was a retreat for early Christian hermits. Apart from the large gannet colony, the island is now uninhabited.

The remains of an old castle, which subsequently was used as a prison, can still be seen on the island. The Bass Rock Lighthouse was built in 1902. It is still operational, but has been unmanned since 1988.
